AVG Anti-Virus FREE INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: READ BEFORE INSTALLING. THERE ARE FEATURES YOU DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL THAT WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR COMPUTER!
Follow these steps to properly install AVG Free Version.
Step 1) Download AVG Free Edition from here: -> http://www.jaymor.com/downloads/avg_free_stf_en_90_686a1719.exe
Step 2) Locate file and double click the file -> Run Installation -> when prompted for default or custom install, choose custom.
Step 3) Remove and Add Component to match the image below.
Step 4) After installation is complete you will be asked how often to update and time and day to scan.
I recommend the following settings.
- Updates: Once a day.
- Scans: Weekly, choose a day that’s best for you.
I recommend setting it to NEVER, I don’t like anything running automatically on my computer.
- Enable automatic scan, etc… leave unchecked.
Step 5) You will then be prompted to provide anonymous information, choose NO –> finish
You will be prompted to optimize scan, if you have time feel free to do this, if not don’t worry about it, it will happen when you manually run a scan.
Tweaking the Tweak!
To take the install a step further to really slim down the install I will uncheck the option labeled "Plugin for Microsoft Office 2000/XP/2003/2007".
Unchecking this option will disable AVG from checking files you open with MSOffice, i.e... word, excel, powerpoint, access, etc... I turn it off for the following reasons;
1) When I download files to my computer, either from the net, disk, USB, etc... I always right click the file and choose scan with AVG before I do anything with it.
2) It slows down MSOffice especially when I'm opening files from my server.
If you turn the feature off be sure to always scan with avg first.
In addition, I will uncheck the option labeled "Additional installed languages" english is it default install language. No need for additional languages.
I do not recommend the above if you are not a power user.
